Even if you\u2019re trying to avoid it, sugar is tricky and totally sneaky. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the places that can be most challenging? Our daily beverage of choice. Whether it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleaneatingmag.com\/clean-experts\/is-coffee-on-the-clean-eating-diet-plan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coffee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleaneatingmag.com\/clean-diet\/food-health-news\/the-best-flavonoid-rich-foods-you-can-eat\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that you prefer, if you\u2019re accustomed to sipping these bevvies with added sweeteners and sugar, that can be a tough habit to break. And if you drink multiple cups a day, all of that sweetness really adds up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToo much sugar in coffee or tea can be an issue, as you might not realize how much sugar you\u2019re consuming,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kristen.carli\/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kristen Carli<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MS, RD, owner of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.camelbacknutritionwellness.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Camelback Nutrition &amp; Wellness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Scottsdale, Arizona. So, how can you curtail your sugars and sweeteners without making your coffee or tea taste less-than-great? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carli recommends a three-step process to reduce the sugar in your beverage of choice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Step 1: Assess your habits<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you begin trying to reduce, take an honest, judgment-free look at where you are. After all, it\u2019s important to know just how much sugar you\u2019re used to adding to your morning mug of tea or midday coffee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would first assess your baseline,\u201d Carli says. \u201cDo you include a sugar-filled creamer, add liquid sugar, granulated sugar, etc.? How much sugar is your starting point?\u201d The point is not to shame yourself, but just to understand where you are so you can go from there, and celebrate your wins along the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Step 2: Gradually reduce your sweetener use<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you like your beverage very sweet, trying to cut all sweeteners at once might be daunting. So, try a no-pressure approach instead. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMaybe the first week, you consume your coffee with just the sugary creamer and leave out the other forms of sugar,\u201d Carli suggests. \u201cThen, after a few weeks of this, try reducing the amount of the sugary creamer you use.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/diet-and-nutrition\/healthy-eating\/7-healthy-sugar-substitutes\/\">Break the Sugar Habit and Use One of These 7 Healthy Substitutes Instead<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Step 3: Keep experimenting<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have to get to zero sweetness if that will kill your enjoyment of your morning coffee or your afternoon tea. Rather, just reduce how much sugar you\u2019re using as much as you can. Any reduction in sugar is a win, so give yourself a virtual high five for that. And keep looking for ways to reduce more \u2013 for example, you can try a lighter or darker roast if you drink coffee or different flavors of tea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changing the type of creamer you add can make a difference, too. \u201cFoods that contain natural sugar, like the lactose in milk and cream, can help things taste sweeter without any added sugar,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.franceslargemanroth.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frances Largeman-Roth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, RDN. So if you\u2019re currently drinking black coffee with sugar added, stirring in a light splash of milk or cream might help you reduce the sugar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there\u2019s one thing you definitely <em>shouldn\u2019t<\/em> do: Replace sugar with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">artificial sweeteners<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Subbing in an artificial sweetener will keep your palate primed for sweetness \u2013 and it just might even exacerbate the problem. \u201cSplenda is 600 times sweeter than sugar. And even a natural sugar alternative, stevia, is 200 times sweeter than sugar,\u201d Carli warns. \u201cI\u2019ve had patients try to make the switch from stevia to sugar and found that sugar was not sweet enough. This is why I recommend you stick to real sugar, but just be mindful of your intake.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of mindfulness, if you\u2019re someone who has better luck making or breaking habits cold turkey, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28795605\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates that being mindful while breaking your sweetened beverage habit can make a real difference. So, instead of gulping your cup on the go, give yourself a few minutes to really focus on your beverage. Appreciate the aroma, the way the steam looks as it rises out of the cup, the different flavor notes you pick up when you sip.
