To some, it ushers in newfound freedom that liberates them from cramps, bleeding, and contraception. But for most women who are just beginning to feel the effects of the change of life, menopause can be downright mystifying \u2014 but it doesn\u2019t have to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Understanding the Menopause Transition<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hellobonafide.com\/pages\/state-of-menopause\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 State of Menopause survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 1,039 U.S. women ages 40 to 65 by Bonafide revealed that nearly half of women (45%) didn\u2019t know the distinction between perimenopause and menopause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menopause is defined as the cessation of ovarian function for at least 12 months \u2014 or, in laymen\u2019s terms, no periods for a full year. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/what-menopause\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute on Aging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, menopausal transition most often begins between ages 45 to 55 and lasts about seven years (though it can be as long as 14).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since it is a transition, there are two other important timeframes leading up to menopause that every woman should know about:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Premenopause:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when you have no symptoms of perimenopause or menopause<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Perimenopause: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when you become symptomatic, due to a drop in estrogen<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perimenopause lasts for two to eight years, on average, says board-certified OB\/GYN and menopause expert, Dr. JoAnn Richichi, DO, of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/axiawh.com\/providers\/richichi-joann\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Axia Women\u2019s Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And in the United States, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.menopause.org\/for-women\/menopauseflashes\/menopause-symptoms-and-treatments\/menopause-101-a-primer-for-the-perimenopausal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">average age of menopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is 51. Of course, every woman\u2019s timeline is different (read: You won\u2019t necessarily follow these norms, and you might not even follow the same pattern as your mother or sisters).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Health Risks Associated With Menopause<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though menopause affects your reproductive system, that\u2019s not the only area it impacts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSince hormones control every organ and every bodily function, as they become depleted, so do we,\u201d says Dr. Richichi. \u201cThat decrease in hormones can decrease our overall sense of wellbeing and render us at risk for metabolic compromise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She explains that as we age, we are at risk of developing high blood pressure, cardiac disease, high cholesterol, and osteoporosis. \u201cWhile diet, weight management, and exercise are extremely important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, treatments like bio-identical hormone replacement therapy can also help restore the natural hormone levels and decrease the instance of adverse metabolic conditions,\u201d Dr. Richichi says. \u201cThe goal with this unique anti-aging modality is to optimize us and make us feel like we once did in our 30s and 40s.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Common Menopause Symptoms<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While all the following signs <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be attributed to any number of health conditions (which is why it\u2019s always wise to consult your physician), they are also often associated with menopause:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hot flashes and night sweats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight changes (often gaining fat and losing muscle)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia or other sleep disturbances<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaginal dryness\/painful sex<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased libido<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bladder control issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mood changes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty concentrating, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/conditions-and-wellness\/menopause-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facial hair growth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry skin, eyes, or mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Racing heart<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aches and pains<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/conditions-and-wellness\/womens-health\/mind-body-spirit-guide-to-menopause\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms of menopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are due, we think, to the significant fluctuations in estrogen level,\u201d says Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, MD,\u00a0clinical professor, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, Yale Medical School, pointing specifically to hot flashes, insomnia, headaches and cognitive\/mood issues. \u201cSome are just the loss of estrogen, and they get worse over time \u2014 such as vaginal dryness and bladder symptoms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Richichi explains that the \u201cmajority\u201d of women have several of these aforementioned symptoms, but they aren\u2019t necessarily a given \u2014 and all hope is certainly not lost if you do experience them. \u201cWe do not fully know why some may feel worse than others,\u201d she says. \u201cOf those who have a wide array of symptoms, there is no reason why, with proper help, they couldn\u2019t lead a healthy, happy, productive, and disease-free lifestyle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the key here, truly, is getting the proper help. According to the Bonafide survey, a whopping 73% of women reported they aren\u2019t currently treating their symptoms. That\u2019s right, nearly three-fourths of U.S. women are just \u201ctoughing it out\u201d instead of exploring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/conditions-and-wellness\/womens-health\/7-natural-ways-to-mitigate-menopause-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">natural treatment options for menopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, filling their plates with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/conditions-and-wellness\/womens-health\/7-best-foods-for-menopause\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the best foods for menopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or talking to their doctors about hormone replacement therapy. The fact that 34% of the women surveyed hadn\u2019t been \u201cformally\u201d diagnosed as menopausal by a healthcare provider may be partially to blame for suffering through their symptoms in silence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Do I Still Need to Visit a Gynecologist After Menopause?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, menopause does not mean you have a free pass from your regular visits to the gynecologist\u2019s office. \u201cA woman less than age 65 years of age \u2014 menopausal or not \u2014 should see a gynecologist every year for a routine checkup,\u201d affirms Dr. Richichi. \u201cA routine check-up is important in assessing one\u2019s overall health and staying on top of preventative screenings.
