Many will consult a doctor, but not act on the course of treatment. This is due mainly to the bad press hormone replacement therapy has gotten.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while it may be 2022, doctors still don\u2019t understand why there\u2019s such a variation in symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf we knew why some women have no problems and others are miserable, we would have our Nobel prizes,\u201d says Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, MD,\u00a0clinical professor, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, Yale Medical School. \u201cNo one knows.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>When to Seek Help<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the one thing the medical community <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> agree on is that nobody needs to suffer in silence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy experience has shown that close to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> women going through menopause have symptoms, and they need to be addressed when they start affecting your life,\u201d says functional health expert <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dr.mindypelz\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Mindy Pelz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Menopause-Reset-Symptoms-Younger-Again\/dp\/1950367991\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Menopause Reset: Get Rid of Your Symptoms and Feel Like Your Younger Self Again<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSo if you&#8217;re getting hot flashes at night, and it&#8217;s affecting your sleep, you need to address it. If a woman has severe brain fog or mood disorders, like anxiety or depression, that is affecting the quality of her life, she\u2019s going to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">need<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to address it. It all depends on how bad her symptoms are, and how drastically it&#8217;s affecting her ability to function in normal day-to-day life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you decide to take matters into your own hands, versus seeking the help of an expert, proceed with caution. \u201cIt can be dangerous to pile on many remedies without knowing how they interact,\u201d warns Burns. \u201cIf you try the DIY approach, try one thing at a time for two to three weeks before considering any additions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to Ease Menopause Symptoms Naturally<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re looking to take a more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/conditions-and-wellness\/a-holistic-approach-to-menopause\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">holistic approach to menopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, consider implementing the following as needed:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Fasting. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s tempting to treat yourself to comfort food when you\u2019re not feeling your best, but giving your digestive system a break with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/diet-and-nutrition\/healthy-eating\/intermittent-fasting-decoded\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intermittent fasting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be just what the doctor ordered. \u201cCompressing your eating window anywhere between 13 to 15 hours naturally aids a woman going through menopause because it makes her \u2018insulin sensitive\u2019 again,\u201d says Dr. Pelz. \u201cFor a menopausal woman, as estrogen declines, she becomes less insulin-sensitive and she&#8217;s more insulin-resistant, causing her to gain weight.<\/span><b><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Carb cycling. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of cutting carbs in hopes of staving off weight gain, try cycling them instead. Simply put, this means you\u2019ll have days with low carb intake, then days with higher carb intake. \u201cThe reason that this is important is that it helps her balance hormones,\u201d explains Dr. Pelz. \u201cEstrogen is going to do really well on a lower-carb diet. But progesterone actually does better with a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carb diet.\u201d Not just any carb will do, though. She says the specific carbs that help progesterone are beans, rice, squashes, tropical fruits, and citrus fruits.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Eating greens. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you aren\u2019t familiar with estrobolome, it\u2019s a set of bacteria in our gut that breaks estrogen down \u2014 and it can make a noticeable difference in menopausal women. \u201cShe&#8217;s going to want to make sure that she is eating plenty of green leafy vegetables and getting a really diverse amount of vegetables,\u201d advises Dr. Pelz. \u201cSo if she goes to make a salad, she&#8217;s going to want to use mixed greens, spinach, parsley, basil, mint, etc. \u2014 throw as many different greens in there as possible in order to feed the estrobolome.\u201d This set of bacteria is so critical for menopausal women because it breaks estrogen down so that it doesn&#8217;t get stored in our tissues. \u201cMost breast cancers and hormonal cancers happen to women after menopause and that&#8217;s largely because of the inability to break estrogen down,\u201d she concludes. \u201cSo, bottom line, increase your intake of leafy greens.\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While nutrition is top of mind, brush up on these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/conditions-and-wellness\/womens-health\/7-best-foods-for-menopause\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seven best foods for menopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>OTC products. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, a trip to the drugstore or health foods store can provide lasting relief. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For menopausal women, sustaining long periods of cortisol spikes is a no-no. \u201cIf levels of chronic stress are up, cortisol is constantly surging through the body, then sex hormones \u2014 estrogen, progesterone and testosterone \u2014 will be very, very low,\u201d says Dr. Pelz. \u201cAnd these hormones are already decreased in menopausal women.\u201d Lean on tools that help you slow down, such as mindfulness techniques, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/conditions-and-wellness\/fitness\/the-5-best-apps-for-yoga-and-meditation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meditation, yoga<\/span><\/a><span
