{"id":2260,"date":"2021-05-18T09:00:48","date_gmt":"2021-05-18T15:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/2017\/01\/01\/natural-fibromyalgia-treatments\/"},"modified":"2021-05-18T12:57:49","modified_gmt":"2021-05-18T18:57:49","slug":"natural-fibromyalgia-treatments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/conditions-and-wellness\/womens-health\/natural-fibromyalgia-treatments\/","title":{"rendered":"Women&#8217;s Health: Natural Fibromyalgia Treatments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fibromyalgia (or fibro for short) is a disease defined by aches and pains all over the body, frequently accompanied by fatigue. It affects more than 4 million people in the U.S., more than 80 percent of whom are women, most commonly between the ages of 20 and 50. Up until 2010, a diagnosis of fibro was given\u2014once everything else was ruled out\u2014if a person experienced pain or tenderness in 11 of 18 specified \u201ctender points,\u201d and if she had chronic pain for more than three months in all four quadrants of the body.<\/p>\n<p>But that test was both imperfect and very subjective. And it missed a lot of people. In 2010, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rheumatology.org\/I-Am-A\/Patient-Caregiver\/Diseases-Conditions\/Fibromyalgia\">American College of Rheumatology<\/a> changed the criteria for a diagnosis. You still have to \u201crule everything else out,\u201d but there\u2019s no more tender point analysis. Instead, doctors now use a 19-item checklist called the Widespread Pain Index (WPI), coupled with a symptom severity scale. Used together, these two measures are expected to identify 88 percent of cases without using a physical or tender point exam.<\/p>\n<p>Even with these new diagnostic tools, fibromyalgia is still a \u201cdisease of exclusion,\u201d meaning that you have to rule out a whole bunch of other things\u2014including hypothyroidism, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis\u2014before deciding that you\u2019re dealing with fibro. And that usually means a lot of lab tests.<\/p>\n<p>To make things more confusing, other conditions often exist together with fibro, including chronic neck or back pain, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/supplements\/herbs-that-protect-against-lyme-disease\/\">Lyme disease<\/a>, and sleep disorders. Because there\u2019s so much pain and fatigue involved, many fibro sufferers also go thorough depression. And to top it all off, fibromyalgia and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/conditions-and-wellness\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome\/\">chronic fatigue syndrome<\/a> (CFS) are frequently confused, have many overlapping symptoms, and are often present in the same patient. Some experts even consider them the same disease, albeit with slightly different presenting symptoms.<\/p>\n<h2>An Expert\u2019s Perspective on Fibromyalgia<\/h2>\n<p>Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, a Hawaii-based internist, has a unique perspective on fibromyalgia. Not only is he one of the foremost experts on the disease, he also overcame personal bouts of both fibromyalgia and CFS in 1975. He spent the next three decades creating, researching, and teaching effective therapies, and today is medical director of the Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers nationally. In 2007, he distilled his wealth of knowledge on fibro and CFS into the bestselling books <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fatigued-Fantastic-Jacob-Teitelbaum-M-D\/dp\/1583332898\"><em>From Fatigued to Fantastic<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fatigue-Fibromyalgia-Solution-Essential-Overcoming\/dp\/1583335145\"><em>The Fatigue and Fibromyalgia Solution<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an energy crisis,\u201d says Teitelbaum. \u201cPeople \u2018spend\u2019 more energy than they make, and they basically blow a fuse.\u201d Asked how a person knows they have it, he says, \u201cIf they have widespread pain and fatigue and can\u2019t sleep even though they\u2019re exhausted, they\u2019ve got it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But what is the \u201cit\u201d that such patients have? Chronic fatigue syndrome? Or fibromyalgia? \u201cIt\u2019s pretty simple,\u201d explains Teitelbaum. \u201cIf you present with these symptoms to a rheumatologist, the doctor will tell you it\u2019s fibro. If you present to an infectious disease specialist, that person will tell you it\u2019s chronic fatigue. They\u2019re just two of many names for the same condition. Others are Epstein-Barr syndrome or post-Lyme disease. But we\u2019re basically talking about the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Finding the Cause of Fibromyalgia<\/h2>\n<p>According to Teitelbaum, there are \u201chundreds\u201d of ways to \u201cblow a fuse.\u201d It can happen from a trauma, especially anything that causes a neck injury, such as whiplash. Spinal cord compression in the neck sometimes seems to trigger autonomic dysfunction. \u201cEven minor injuries can trigger fibro, especially if they disturb sleep or cause head or neck injury,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Teitelbaum explains that with a head injury, there is frequent disturbance to what\u2019s called the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. The hypothalamus uses more energy for its size than any other area of the body. It also controls sleep. When its normal function is disturbed\u2014as in an injury\u2014sleep is consequently disturbed. \u201cYou\u2019re exhausted, but you can\u2019t sleep,\u201d says Teitelbaum. \u201cNow you\u2019re in a full-blown \u2018energy crisis\u2019\u2014you\u2019ve got widespread pain and exhaustion, and you can\u2019t sleep on top of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Managing Pain<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cPain is like the oil light on your body\u2019s dashboard,\u201d says Teitelbaum. \u201cIt means something needs attention. And fibro pain is your body\u2019s cry for energy.\u201d While treating the disease, you also have to treat the pain. Teitelbaum\u2019s natural approach includes curcumin, an anti-inflammatory ingredient found in turmeric, and the herb boswellia, also anti-inflammatory.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15651\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15651\" src=\"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/curcumin-1.jpg?width=690\" alt=\"Curcumin can help in managing the pain and inflammation associated with fibromyalgia.\" width=\"690\" height=\"455\" \/><figcaption class=\"pom-caption \"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Natural Treatments<\/h2>\n<p>Fibro and CFS are two conditions for which conventional medicine has little to offer. Symptoms are often managed with antidepressants and painkillers, but this is a lousy solution\u2014and most patients know it.<\/p>\n<p>Teitelbaum has a different approach, which he calls the SHINE protocol. SHINE stands for Sleep, Hormonal Support, Infections, Nutritional Support, and Exercise (as able). In a study funded by Teitelbaum\u2019s foundation, 91 percent of patients improved on this protocol, with a whopping 90 percent increase in their ratings of \u201cquality of life.\u201d Here\u2019s how it works:<\/p>\n<h3>Sleep:<\/h3>\n<p>Teitelbaum suggests a daily dose of \u00bd mg of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/conditions-and-wellness\/sleep-insomnia\/how-to-take-melatonin\/\">melatonin<\/a>, plus a mostly herbal-based sleep formula with ingredients such as passionflower, hops, and L-theanine.<\/p>\n<h3>Hormones:<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Hormone tests aren\u2019t reliable,\u201d says Teitelbaum. \u201cIf you\u2019re tired and fatigued, you deserve a trial of thyroid hormone. If you\u2019re irritable when hungry, you deserve a trial of adrenal support.\u201d He also suggests considering a trial of iodine, 6.25 mg per day of the tri-iodine form. \u201cYou\u2019ll know in the first month that it\u2019s working,\u201d he says. Teitelbaum suggests Tri-Iodine by Terry Naturally.<\/p>\n<h3>Infections:<\/h3>\n<p>Identify and treat any infections\u2014especially candida. For more information, see Teitelbaum\u2019s book, <em>The Fatigue and Fibromyalgia Solution<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>Nutritional Support:<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cMost people find they feel better on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betternutrition.com\/diet-and-nutrition\/keto-diet-guide\/\">low-carb\/high-protein diet<\/a>,\u201d says Teitelbaum. He highly recommends increasing your water intake, avoiding sugar, and, although counterintuitive, increasing your salt intake as well. \u201cIf you restrict salt in people with fibromyalgia, the patients will crash and burn,\u201d he says, because the adrenals make salt- and water-retaining hormones called mineralocorticoids. \u201cThese folks are dehydrated,\u201d he says. \u201cThey benefit by increasing both water and salt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teitelbaum likes the herb licorice (not the candy) because it slows the breakdown of adrenal hormones. You can find it in teas and adrenal formulas, but do not use licorice without a doctor\u2019s OK if you have high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>He also recommends taking 500 mg per day of vitamin C, 50 mg per day of vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), and adrenal glandulars.<\/p>\n<h3>Exercise:<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cDo as able,\u201d is Teitelbaum\u2019s recommendation. \u201cExercise helps. Do what you can.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Energizing Nutrients:<\/h3>\n<p>The following nutrients can help increase energy in fibro patients\u2014 magnesium, potassium aspartate, malic acid (works especially well when combined with magnesium), ribose, and NADH (which can take up to two months to produce results). The important thing to remember is that you can live a long, happy, and pain-free life with fibro. Just ask Teitelbaum\u2014he\u2019s been doing it for more than 35 years. You just have to find a treatment that works for you. And ignore any doctor who tells you that fibromyalgia is \u201call in your head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teitelbaum highly recommends increasing water intake, avoiding sugar, and increasing salt intake as
